Face-T
Born in Montreal, Nicolas Latendresse (aka Face T) spent his childhood and young adulthood in Jamaica. Immersed in Jamaican culture, he developed a passion for reggae and, more specifically, dancehall. By the age of five, Nicolas was already expressing himself in Jamaican patois and learning the local rap music known as DJ style (not to be confused with disc jockey). Back in Montreal, Face T began collaborating with producer Scorpio B, who led him to write his first songs in French. In 2000, Scorpio B introduced him to singer Rebel, with whom Face T formed Kulcha Connection, a pioneering French-language dancehall group. The group enjoyed great success not only in Quebec, but throughout the French-speaking world. In 2006, Face T’s encounter with DJ/producer Ghislain Poirier led him to explore new musical avenues, which he likes to call “tropical bass”. Together, they set audiences alight at all the world’s major festivals. Face-t is currently completing a solo album, scheduled for release in winter 2012. His music and lyrics are deeply rooted in the Jamaican tradition, yet infused with many other musical cultures. Tinged with new Caribbean trends, his music is at times festive, talkative and rhythmic, at other times slow, heavy and spiritual.
